This Monday the sad news of the death of Juan Manuel Sáenz was known, a man from La Plata who was buried by an avalanche while skiing with friends in Canada. In this context, one of the survivors of the tragedy, Joshua Alonsogave a crude account of what happened last Thursday in the area known as High Wide Power.
“The six of us were in one part, we jumped in and a very large avalanche 100 meters wide came off and grabbed three of us”told in dialogue with the newspaper The people’s voice from his hometown, Tres Arroyos.
“The idea of the trip was to do it in a motorhome for two weeks, we started walking on Sunday the 12th, we did a couple of days,” he explained from the Calgary clinic, where he underwent surgery and is recovering from his serious injuries. Alonso said that, at the time of the avalanche, the snow dragged them over stone jumps and trees, and hit them violently.
Because of what happened, two of his friends, Sáenz from City Bell and Gerónimo Regina from the town of Lobos died instantlywhile Josué could be found by a German tourist who was looking for survivors.
Regarding the way in which they found him, he pointed out that “his body was left under the snow and his head was outside. He had the security device that is for avalanches that emits waves so that they can find us, thank God he had that and they were able to track me. They dug me up, my right leg is quite broken, tibia and fibula in three parts, my ankle is broken in several parts and the pelvis too, they activated all the rescue systems by helicopter and took me to the clinic, ”he recounted.
It is worth noting that the surprise avalanche of snow happened in a Canadian region that is characterized by having several ski resorts, close to the area known as Terminator 2 on the outskirts of Kicking Horse Ski Resort. As a result, they died at least two young Argentines, among whom was Sáenz, a 37-year-old from La Plata that He had lived in Chile for a long time and had traveled there on vacation.
Sáenz was a native of City Bell, but had lived in Chile for a long time. The young man was a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the UNLP, as indicated on his social networks, and was spending vacations in Canada with his wife when the unfortunate event that cost him his life happened.
