El Instituto Meteorológico de Islandia informó que “se cerró otro capítulo de la reactivación volcánica en la península de Reykjanes

Reykjavik. The eruption of a volcano near the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, has officially ended, the meteorological institute announced Wednesday after recording that the mountain has been inactive for ten days.

“Ten days have passed since the last recorded activity in the Litli Hrutur crater. There is no longer any observable deformation in the area and the seismic activity has decreased considerably,” the Icelandic Meteorological Institute (IMO) said in a statement.

“Consequently, we can say that another chapter of the volcanic reactivation in the Reykjanes peninsula has been closed,” he added.

Thousands of people flocked near the mount to see the glowing lava pouring out of the ground.

The Reykjanes Peninsula did not record an eruption for eight centuries, but in 2021 a resurgence of volcanic activity began.

Iceland lies between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and is one of the most active volcanic regions on Earth, with 33 volcanoes or volcanic systems listed as active.

In 2010, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, in the south of the island, generated the biggest disruption to air traffic in peacetime with tens of thousands of flights canceled and millions of passengers blocked for several days.
