The team behind the quirky little portable games console Playdate, perhaps best known for its built-in crank (yes, you read that correctly), have now announced that sales have far exceeded expectations. Initially, there were concerns that the device would sell at most 20,000 copies, but these figures have proven to be grossly underestimated. For Playdate has at the time of writing managed to reach 53,000 customers around the world and Playdate CEO Greg Maletic was quick to thank everyone involved with an official statement that read as follows:

“It’s been a great year for Playdate. When we started, we had no idea how big the audience would be for a weird product like this, but we told the factory: build 20,000. To have now sold more than 53,000 (and counting) is heartening. And this, at a time when parts shortages forced our delivery lead-times out as much as a year. As those lead-times shorten and Playdate delivery becomes more immediate, we’re looking forward to an even better Year Two.”

If for some reason you missed Playdate and are more curious about the small game console, you can check out their product video here. We are of course happy on behalf of the team and wish them continued success!

Do you own a Playdate and what do you think?

The world’s cutest little console?
