The colleagues from GamesIndustry.biz have compiled some numbers about the gaming year 2022, which are very interesting to read. In doing so, they also use the data of several market research companies such as the NPD Group, Sensor Tower or GfK. It is estimated that the games industry was able to turn over around 184.4 billion US dollars in 2022.

That sounds like a lot, but includes a 4.3% drop when compared to 2021. However, 2021 was also a particularly high phase for the gaming industry due to the corona pandemic. Most of the money was made from mobile games ($92.2 billion). This is followed by console games at $51.8 billion and only then PC games at $38.2 billion. Browser games, on the other hand, hardly play a role anymore and account for 1% of the total market – or 2.3 billion US dollars.

94.2% of sales ($173.8 billion) are now generated digitally – only 5.8% ($10.7 billion) come from the sale of retail games. The trend towards purely digital sales is therefore continuing. But it’s also logical, since, for example, the high-revenue mobile games can only be obtained purely digitally via the stores.

By the way, according to Metacritic, “Elden Ring” was the most popular game with critics with an average score of 96. The worst came off “Postal 4: No Regerts” with an average rating of 30.

GamesIndustry has compiled more numbers, but I don’t want to repeat all of them here. But it is perhaps still very exciting which games on the social network Twitter have attracted the most attention this year. Anyone who expects “Elden Ring” to be number 1 here is wrong. Rather, “Genshin Impact” takes first place. This is followed by “Final Fantasy XIV” and only in third place then “Elden Ring”. I myself am particularly amazed that I can’t spot “Fortnite” in the list. There seems to be little need for discussion.

In any case, I hope that you have found some nice titles for yourselves in 2022 – maybe there will be some time to gamble over the holidays?
