Sweden already has national strategies against terrorism and against violent extremism. The government now wants a similar strategy to be established against the gangs.

According to Gunnar Strömmer, that work is to be a main task for the new council against organized crime that has been established in the Ministry of Justice. That council includes, among other things, the heads of the central law enforcement agencies. The council will begin its work in about a week.

– We must bring about a completely different collective system force to push back the gangs, said the minister.

Want to increase the police’s ability

Gunnar Strömmer also believes that the government wants to review a law that prohibits participation in criminal gangs. In the near future, the government also intends to give the Swedish Police Agency a special mission to increase the police’s operational capacity. The idea is to increase the efficiency of the National Operational Branch, NOA, and the National Forensic Center of the police, NFC.
