The head of NATO’s military committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, warned on Saturday that the substantial increase in the price of munitions does not mean that an increase in defense spending automatically translates into more security and called for a new approach to military cooperation. “Prices for equipment and ammunition are increasing. Right now we are paying more and more for exactly the same thing”, said the Dutch admiral, after a meeting of the military leaders of the alliance held in Oslo.

“This means that we cannot be sure that an increase in military spending actually leads to more security,” he explained.

Bauer spoke for a new approach to public-private cooperation in the field of defense, with a view to increasing production capacity.

”Long-term stability must prevail over short-term profits. As we saw in Ukraine, the war affects the whole society,” he continued.

In February, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned Kiev that it was using artillery shells at a rate greater than the West can produce. Ukraine had managed to launch 10,000 155mm caliber artillery shells daily.
