The first episode of The Last of Us drew a crowd of onlookers to HBO and HBO Max on Sunday night. So much so that the series is directly climbed on the podium of the most prolific launches of the chain, behind Boardwalk Empire and the unattainable House of the Dragon.

American fans of the video game franchise were in the starting blocks on Sunday evening. So much so that HBO Max’s servers crashed, too many users trying to watch The Last of Us. The numbers have now fallen. The adaptation of the famous game attracted 4.7 million viewers (HBO and HBO Max combined). What allow the series to enter the very closed circle of the best launches of the chain.

The Last of Us obviously does not reach the indecent score achieved by House of the Dragon Last year. As a reminder, the spin-off of Game Of Thrones had attracted a whopping 9.986 million viewers for its premiere. Either the absolute record for an HBO program. In second position, we find the series Boardwalk Empire which stars Steve Buscemi. The first episode drew 4.81 million viewers in 2010. The Last of Us ranks third with an honorable score of 4.7 million.

The Last of Us hits HBO

Obviously, these figures do not include audiences achieved via other broadcast platforms around the world. In France in particular, The Last of Us is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. HBO can rub their hands, the series is already a huge hit. Especially since, depending on the channel, Sunday evening audiences generally represent 20% to 40% of the series’ total gross audience per episode.

After very rave reviews, many people flocked to social networks to salute the quality of the first episode, seduced in particular by the performances full of accuracy of the actors. The story of The Last of Us is modeled on that of the eponymous video game with all the same some scriptwriting subtleties. We follow Joel and Ellie as they try to survive a devastating pandemic that turns infected people into bloodthirsty monsters.
