Gas and utilities increase this year / Archive

To cover all the expenses of a basket of services in March 2023, a family will need $320,683 per month, according to a Focus Market report that projected the increase in expenses on services for a typical family.

The results that arise from the last report carried out by the private consultancy, reflect what will be the amount that a typical family would have to pay for the basic basket of “middle class”, only contemplating the services.

To prepare the basket, consumption was considered in electricity, water and gas rates, housing rental and expenses, transport expenses that include fuel, one taxi a week and public transport, communication, internet, cable and streaming, school private, among others.

In September 2022, the segmentation with phased reduction of the state contribution to users of natural gas and electricity was implemented.

When taking the case of a typical family of 4 members (two adults and 2 school-age children) to assess how it will affect their household bills, we must detail that in September 2022 they began paying $4,500 for electricity and at the end of the tariff readjustment they would end up paying $7,776 (removal of subsidies in 3 tranches of 20%, hoping that in April 2023 they will come closer to paying more than 70% of the full rate).

One of the most important services that a family has is rent (for this, a contract beginning in March 2020 was taken as the starting point, which is corrected by the Rental Contract Index for 2022 and finally by the data of the REM), therefore this typical family will go from paying $60,000 to $114,000 by March 2023. If we also add to this the expenses, we will see that these had an interannual increase of 100%, for which this family would go from paying $12,500 to $20,202 in March 2023.

In the case of fuel, monthly increases of around 4% and 3.8% in March are already being applied. Thus, he will go from paying $20,000 per month to $25,258 for using the private car.

For both internet, cable and telephony, companies will be able to apply increases of 4% in January 2023, 4% in February, 3% in March, and up to 3.5% in April, thus increasing the following values: internet would go from $3,800 to $5,133, cable and streaming platforms from $3,700 to $4,998, and phone from $3,200 to $4,903.
