Many manufacturers presented new PCs at CES 2023. Taking stock, one trend stands out: the screen has become the king of innovation in the field.

By taking place at the beginning of January, the role of CES 2023 is to define the major trends in tech for the year to come. If we observe the many announcements in the field of the PC, a fairly clear trend is emerging: the screen is at the center of all innovations.

It must be said that, apart from a generation change at Intel, AMD and Nvidia always promising more performance, the rest of the laptop PC has changed little: the USB-C connector is still there, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or storage and RAM no longer know revolutions. It is right before our eyes that everything is changing.

The Oled continues to democratize on PC

For several years, we have known about Oled screens at Asus and in a more fragmented way at other brands. It must be said that the manufacturer now occupies more than 60% of the Oled market on PC alone. This hegemony of Asus should end in 2023.

LG will in particular switch its range of LG Gram ultraportables to Oled in 2023, without changing the featherweight of its machines.

Samsung notably presented an impressive 49-inch Oled screen in its Odyssey range. Lenovo is not left out with several machines equipped with Oled tiles. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus goes even further by adding an e-ink screen on its second side to maximize autonomy on certain tasks. Acer also developed Oled monitors with LG Display at CES 2023.

And the miniLED is an alternative

But Oled technology is not the alpha and omega of the modern PC screen. Apple has already demonstrated it with its MacBook Pro 14, a mini-LED screen can offer both very precise colors, an excellent level of contrast and impressive brightness. A screen that then looks flawless, whether for work or play.

This is undoubtedly what convinced Razer to highlight this technology with its new Razer Blade 16 and 18. In this regard, they denote another trend at CES: the enlargement of the panels thanks to the narrowing of the borders. Several manufacturers have announced PCs with more generous and more comfortable diagonals, especially for gaming PCs. HP, for its part, unveiled an Omen laptop equipped with a 17-inch screen.

The video game still attracts as much

Growth in the PC sector has for several years come from the gaming segment. At CES 2023, brands have redoubled their efforts to convince. We have thus seen machines like the Acer Predators line up all the superlatives. Products integrating the 13th generation of Intel Core and the GeForce RTX 4000 for laptops.

Alienware’s 500Hz display

Here again we should not forget the screen: Acer announces QHD up to 250 Hz. Alienware offered a screen capable of going up to 500 Hz.

There are also those who seek to bring the video game into new boxes. We think of the evolution of GeForce Now in the field of cloud gaming, or Dell which seeks to reinvent the gaming PC and works on increasingly fine machines.

Even Chromebooks can touch the video game with cloud gaming. Asus offers a really well thought out example on paper.

And content creators

To shine in a living room, it’s not just products intended for gamers that can hit the mark. Brands also like to aim for “ content creators not to mention YouTube videographers and influencers. To seduce them, you generally need a very high quality screen and cutting-edge performance, but without the garish design of gaming products.

In this area, we must admit that Asus is imposing itself with its new ProArt range which innovates this year with a very convincing 3D display. We were able to discover it on site at the Las Vegas show.

As for external monitors, Samsung presented a ViewFinity S9 screen capable of competing with the Apple Studio Display and Dell is betting on a practical side with USB-C connectivity and 6K definition.

The innovative designs of CES 2023

The CES is also the ground for prototypes or innovative ideas that will not necessarily find immediate success with the general public. Asus has unveiled a new generation of ROG Flow products that still tries to combine ultraportable transformable products with a gaming machine.

The Lenovo YogaBook 9i // Source: Lenovo

But here it’s Lenovo hitting hard with the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i. This PC offers two 2.8K Oled touch screens in the image of the fiery Surface Neo. The brand promises that its design will allow us to improve our productivity, in particular by using it as a large desktop PC if we have access to a table. It’s reminiscent of the Zenbook Fold that we tested in 2022.

2023, the year of a better display on PC

Switching to Oled or mini-LED, even higher display frequency, HDR and ever richer colors: the screen of our PCs will improve greatly in 2023. It was about time, faced with our smartphones and our tablets, the PC was one of the bad students in this area.

The transition to new generations of AMD, Intel or Nvidia chips will no doubt do good in terms of performance and autonomy, but this is not what should change our relationship to the machine or revolutionize uses. The significant improvement in display quality should, on the other hand, provide a noticeable and immediate gain for the user.

Hopefully these changes will quickly permeate the ranges of more accessible machines. The CES is a show where brands display their technological showcases. It’s beautiful, but you still have to be able to afford it. This is one of the great challenges in IT after inflation and the component crisis of 2020-2022.
