The Pope hopes that peace will come soon to Ukraine while his envoy visits Moscow

Vatican City.- Pope Francis wished today that peace would arrive soon in Ukraine and recalled the suffering of the Ukrainians, while his envoy to mediate to stop the war, Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, is in Moscow to meet with various personalities.

«Tomorrow we will celebrate the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul: may the example and protection of these two apostles support each of us in following Christ. To his intercession we entrust the dear Ukrainian people, so that they may soon find peace. There is a lot of suffering in Ukraine, let’s not forget it,” the pope said at the end of today’s general audience held in St. Peter’s Square.

During his catechesis today, the Pope also condemned that “money is spent on weapons and not on food.”

On the other hand, Zuppi arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for his peace mission commissioned by Francis, three weeks after his visit to Kiev, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodomir Zelensky.

At the moment, Zuppi’s agenda is unknown, he may be in the Russian capital with the Orthodox patriarch, Cyril, who was in favor of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and it is also unknown if he will have the opportunity to meet with the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The main objective of the initiative is to promote gestures of humanity, which can contribute to a solution to the current tragic situation and find ways to achieve a just peace,” the Vatican reported on Zuppi’s visit today and tomorrow.
