The Prosecutor's Office proposes January 2, 2024 as the date for Trump's trial for his attempts to reverse the elections

MADRID, 10 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Attorney’s Office has proposed this Friday that the trial against former President Donald Trump for his attempts to reverse the election result and his role in the subsequent assault on the Capitol begin on January 2, 2024.

This has been announced by the office of special prosecutor Jack Smith, in charge of leading the prosecution against Trump. Prosecutors hope to take no more than six weeks to present their evidence to charge the former president of the United States, collects The Hill portal.

“The proposed schedule (…) would give the defendant time to review the case and prepare a defense, and would allow the court and the parties to fully litigate any pre-trial legal issues,” Smith’s office said.

Likewise, the prosecutors have defended that the trial should be held on the proposed date as this would “vindicate the great interest of the public in a speedy trial” to decide whether the former president is finally guilty of trying to annul the electoral results.

According to the prosecutors’ proposal, jury selection would take place on December 11.

Former President Trump has pleaded not guilty to up to four federal crimes for his alleged attempts to reverse the result of the 2020 election, in which he was outvoted by Joe Biden. After several days fanning the ghost of the pucherazo, hundreds of his followers stormed the Capitol in January 2021.
