Once Operation Return was completed on the country’s highways for the New Year festivities, the Traffic and Transportation Directorate of the National Police released the balance it left on the roads of Colombian territory.

According to the figures provided by the Traffic and Transportation Directoratethe road accident rate in the country decreased by 66% during the end of the year bridge. This percentage is evidenced by the 261 less claims that occurred at the beginning of 2023.

According to the report, at the beginning of 2021 – 2022, 394 claims; while, for the same 2022 – 2023 season, only 133.

On the roads of the country there was also a reduction in the figure of Dead peoplewhich went from 78 in 2021 to 53 in 2022, leaving a total of 25 fewer fatal accidentswhich translates into a 32% decrease.

As for the injured, the Ditra registered a decrease of 64% compared to the previous year. In 2021 they registered 485 injuredin front of the 176 2022, which presents a difference of 309 fewer people injured.

Regarding these figures, the transport minister, Guillermo Francisco Reyes Gonzalez, commented that “it is encouraging for the country to know that during the year-end festivities, claims were reduced by 66%. This taking into account that through the roads of our country they mobilized 2.78 million vehicles (passing through tolls)”.

“However, we will continue working so that the figures continue to drop and we can protect life of all Colombians on the road”, added the head of the portfolio.

Within the numbers of deaths on the country’s highways after the New Years season, of the 53 deaths in road accidents, 48 were men Y 5 women. Regarding the number of injured, 122 were men Y 54 women.

The total traffic violations reported by the Traffic and Transportation Directorate also decreased significantly. In 2021 they registered 1,390 comparisons in front of 1,042 that were carried out in 2022, these figures reflect a reduction of 43% compared to the previous season.

Among the most penalized offenses from Friday, December 31, 2022 to January 1, 2023, are: no driving licensewith a record of 318 subpoenas; driving motorcycles without complying with the established rules, with a total of 141 cases; the non-carriage of the certificate of the mechanical technical revision, with 231 cases and the lack of Compulsory Traffic Accident Insurance SOAT with 121 sanctioned vehiclesamong others.

The vehicle mobility on the country’s highways also reflected a reduction in 4 %going from 2.9 million in 2021 to 2.78 million in 2022, that is, 123,000 fewer vehicles than the same period of the previous year.
