Prosecutor Jenny Örn had requested ten years in prison for the suspect. However, the district court sentences the man to seven years in prison.
Danger to other people’s lives
The prosecutor said that it could not be a crime other than aggravated arson as there was a risk to the lives and health of several people. The district court makes the same assessment and writes in the judgment that the man must have known that there were also residential apartments in the building, but that despite this he still started the fire. As a result, the court considers that the action has meant danger to the lives and health of several people and that the fire was started in a densely built-up community where it could have easily spread. Therefore, the act is assessed as aggravated arson.
The trial had to be redone
It was in August at 2 am that the fire broke out in Folkets Hus in Mörsil. Four people who lived in the house managed to get out unharmed. When the emergency services arrived at the scene, it was established that the building could not be saved. In addition to apartments, the property also housed a pizzeria.
A man in his 30s was later arrested and charged with aggravated arson. The trial began but was adjourned in October after a witness failed to appear. The witness was in Turkey, which must give permission for interviews to be held with the witness. A condition that took time to obtain.
Last week, the trial was rescheduled and on Tuesday the verdict was handed down. The man is also sentenced to pay several million in damages.
