The United States government warned Cubans that undertaking a land journey through Central America to cross the border “is dangerous and useless.”

“CAUTION! Undertaking the overland journey through Central America in the hope of reaching the US is dangerous and futile. Most people who arrive at the US southern border do not qualify for political asylum,” expressed the Embassy of Washington in Havana through a post on Twitter.

“Trying to enter the country irregularly will result in a five-year ban on entering the US. Do not believe the lies of human traffickers. Take care of your life and that of your family,” he stresses.

This clarification arises after the Joe Biden administration said on July 28 that it will allow that immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who are in Mexico can apply for entry to the United States as refugees.

This initiative is part of a bilateral agreement for the creation of a “multipurpose international space”, which the governments of Mexico and the US negotiated in order to favor the resettlement of immigrants stranded on Mexican soil after last January 5.

However, the announcement has generated hope in people who were waiting to emigrate from the island, and an increase in requests for air tickets to Nicaragua has been reported, from where they begin the dangerous journey to the US border.

Despite the policies implemented by the Biden Administration, the migratory flow from Cuba to the US does not stop. Although the number of arrivals at land borders has decreased, the flow by sea has increased.
