The US described Lula da Silva’s criticism of Washington as outrageous: “Brazil seems to have aligned itself with China and Russia”

The government of USA affirmed this Saturday that the declarations of the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, about Washington are “outrageous” and that with them Brazil is giving up the claim of neutrality in its speeches about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Despite declaring itself neutral in the geopolitical dispute between the United States and China, Brazil seems to have clearly aligned itself with China and Russia.” as explained by different members of the US government interviewed by the Brazilian media Folha. They stated that “Brazilians have not only failed to appreciate the balance in their positions, but have adopted a clear opposition to Washington”.

“We are not pressuring Brazil not to have relations with the Xi Jinping regime or to choose one of the two countries, since the United States also has great exchanges with China” they pointed out, but they consider that the president of Brazil, the minister of foreign affairs, Mauro Vieira and the special advisor of Lula himself, Celso Amorim, “have adopted a tone of antagonism against the United States”.

The members of the government interviewed by the aforementioned Brazilian media consider Lula’s vision of the United States as an obstacle to ending the war in Ukraine as “most problematic” and China and Russia as the countries that are going to finish it.

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaaffirmed this Saturday from Beijing that “it is necessary for the United States to stop encouraging the war” in Ukraine and “start talking about peace.”

“It is necessary for the European Union to start talking about peace so that we can convince” the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodimir Zelensky, that “peace is in everyone’s interest,” Lula added.

The president made these statements to the media after leaving the Beijing hotel where he stayed and before boarding the Abu Dhabiafter completing his state visit to China, which included a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

Lula, 77 years old and in power since January 1, also called on “countries that are supplying weapons” to the conflict to “stop” doing so and highlighted the “very important” role of China in seeking peace.

“China has a very important role, possibly the most important role. Now, another important role is for the United States,” she clarified.

The head of state once again defended his idea of ​​creating a club of countries “willing to find a way to achieve peace”, something that he has already conveyed to the presidents of France and the United States, Emmanuel Macron and Joe Bidenas well as the German Chancellor, Olaf Schölz.

However, his thesis has not aroused excessive interest on the part of the West.

“Only those who are not defending the war can create a commission of countries and put an end to this war,” said the leader of the Latin American left.

In his opinion, a situation has been reached “in which the two countries (for Russia and Ukraine) have difficulties in making decisions” and, in that case, “It is necessary that third countries that maintain a good relationship with both” generate conditions of peace.

He pointed out that Brazil and China are willing to do so, but insisted that “the goodwill” of all parties is paramount.

In a joint written statement after their bilateral meeting, Lula and Xi Jinping agreed that dialogue and negotiation are the “only feasible way out of the ‘crisis’ in Ukraine.”

In the document, Brazil stated that it “views positively” the Chinese position regarding the conflict, which it considers “useful” to seek a peaceful solution.
