MIAMI.- In Florida, federal sentences for drug trafficking are the ones that are issued most frequently, while fraud, understood as theft or embezzlement, ranks second and, in third position, are the crimes Associated with Immigration.

The Criminal Defense lawyers came to this conclusion after analyze the data of the United States Sentencing Commission (USA) for fiscal year 2022.

The goal of this data analysis is to determine the categories of crimes for which each state receives the most convictions and to be able to deal with them most effectively.

“It’s interesting to see which categories of crimes receive the most federal convictions in each state, and it’s even more fascinating to see that some states have the highest rates across multiple categories. At the state level, it’s vital that adequate resources are used to figure out how each state can be supported to improve the frequency with which they have to deliver these sentences,” a spokesperson for Criminal Defense said of the study’s findings.

Drug trafficking is the most sentenced crime with a rate of 4.54 federal sentences per 100,000. Drug trafficking offenses involve knowingly manufacturing, dispensing, or distributing controlled substances or counterfeit controlled substances intended to pass off as the real thing.

Fraud is defined as any deception or misrepresentation used to benefit someone, theft is the unlawful taking of another person’s property, and embezzlement is theft while in a position of trust over stolen funds or items.

Immigration ranks third with a rate of 1.87 federal convictions per 100,000. This offense relates to the illegal entry into the United States by a foreign national or the commission of a felony as an immigrant to the United States.

Meanwhile, extremely serious crimes committed at different times have already landed five people on death row so far this year. The most recent case is that of James Barnes, 61, who was sentenced to death in 2007 after confessing, in addition to the murder of his wife, Linda, to the rape and murder of Patricia Miller, a 41-year-old nurse. Barnes was executed Thursday at Florida State Prison, local television stations reported.

In the state, crime continues to be the focus of attention. By 2021, a WalletHub study revealed that among the 50 US cities with the highest homicide rate in the third quarter of that year, there were two locations in the state of Florida.

The data contrasts with a previous statistic that restored hope: Florida’s crime rate in 2017 was the lowest in 47 years and 6% less than in 2016, with decreases in almost all types of crimes except rapes, according to the annual report on the matter presented by the then state governor, Rick Scott.
