Certain colors can cost several thousand euros when sold. An investigation shows that. Which colors are real value destroyers – and which are not.

For some time now, more and more colorful cars have been making their way through the commercials and advertisements of the manufacturers. But you should think carefully about whether orange or purple is really the right color for your car. Otherwise, you may need a lot of patience when selling – and make little money.

According to an evaluation by Mobile.de, black and gray are the safest choice among all car colors: When sold, they bring in almost a tenth (9.5 and 9.7 percent respectively) more than the average of all cars. In addition, the advertised cars are clicked on particularly often. So the chances of a quick sale are good. The situation is completely different with colors such as gold and purple: they reduce the value of the car by around a quarter. The prices of the offers were analyzed on the used cars-Platform.

Conversely, if you are looking for a cheap used car, you can save a lot of money by also looking around for a red or blue model – and playing the disadvantageous color as a trump card in price negotiations.

The impairments at a glance

The average price of all cars advertised on the platform was exactly 21,908 euros at the time of the study. The overview shows how much loss or profit the choice of color brings.

Tips for choosing car color

If you want to keep the loss in value within limits, you should also pay attention to the right paintwork when buying. In general, the color must match the car. A bright red and a toxic green might be good choices if you drive a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. On the other hand, such colors are much worse for a well-behaved Passat.

And if you like one of the trendy colors that come back into fashion from time to time, you should only choose it in one case: if you want to sell the car again after a relatively short time. Because trends are usually very short-lived. And as soon as a color is no longer in demand, this also applies to the correspondingly painted car.
