LOS ANGELES.- Jo Koy remembers watching important awards ceremonies like the Golden Globes with his mother on the couch in his living room trying to guess the winners.
It was a ritual that Koy cherished as a child. Years later he became a comedian with several stand-up specials and acting credits, including last year’s film Easter Sunday.
On Sunday, Koy will realize his childhood dream of hosting the Globes, which are seeking to regain their ground after being tarnished by years of scandal. Koy calls his upcoming duties a very important moment.
First Asian host at the Golden Globes
“It’s like going back to my childhood, and now I’m the one on stage,” said Koy, the second Asian host in Globes history. (Sandra Oh was master of ceremonies in 2019). Koy seeks to inspire the Asian community in his first big show as a presenter.
Being a kid, watching TV and not having as many role models that inspired me indirectly, that’s why it’s important to me, said the Filipino-American actor, whose film Easter Sunday It became the first major studio film with a cast of Filipino origin. Koy has premiered five stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his most recent Netflix special, Live From The Los Angeles Forum.
I know there are children who will see the Globes, he said. And now, when you see this, you will think: Oh, it is possible. I can do this. Things are not so gray anymore. Koy hopes to leave a positive mark at the Globes, which are the first major gala of the awards season. The balloons will be broadcast live starting at 5:00 pm Los Angeles time (0100 GMT) on CBS and Paramount+ for users with a Showtime subscription.

Scandal
But the Globes faced a scandal after a 2021 report by the newspaper The Los Angeles Times discovered that there were no African-American members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that granted them, which had only 87 members.
