They are giving me the blessing to be me

LOS ANGELES.- Jo Koy remembers watching important awards ceremonies like the Golden Globes with his mother on the couch in his living room trying to guess the winners.

It was a ritual that Koy cherished as a child. Years later he became a comedian with several stand-up specials and acting credits, including last year’s film Easter Sunday.

On Sunday, Koy will realize his childhood dream of hosting the Globes, which are seeking to regain their ground after being tarnished by years of scandal. Koy calls his upcoming duties a very important moment.

First Asian host at the Golden Globes

“It’s like going back to my childhood, and now I’m the one on stage,” said Koy, the second Asian host in Globes history. (Sandra Oh was master of ceremonies in 2019). Koy seeks to inspire the Asian community in his first big show as a presenter.

Being a kid, watching TV and not having as many role models that inspired me indirectly, that’s why it’s important to me, said the Filipino-American actor, whose film Easter Sunday It became the first major studio film with a cast of Filipino origin. Koy has premiered five stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, including his most recent Netflix special, Live From The Los Angeles Forum.

I know there are children who will see the Globes, he said. And now, when you see this, you will think: Oh, it is possible. I can do this. Things are not so gray anymore. They are not just two colors on the palette. At some point three. Each color is on the palette. This is a beautiful moment. I really want to make sure it’s a success.

Koy hopes to leave a positive mark at the Globes, which are the first major gala of the awards season. The balloons will be broadcast live starting at 5:00 pm Los Angeles time (0100 GMT) on CBS and Paramount+ for users with a Showtime subscription.

The show is known for being a boozy celebration of the best in television and film with a more festive atmosphere compared to the Academy Awards.

Scandal

But the Globes faced a scandal after a 2021 report by the newspaper The Los Angeles Times discovered that there were no African-American members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that granted them, which had only 87 members. Since then, the association has been dissolved, and the voting body for the awards has been renewed to include 300 people.

There are many indications that it will be a stellar gala, that it will have presenters like Michelle Yeoh, Will Ferrell, Angela Bassett, America Ferrera and Amanda Seyfried.

Barbie, by Greta Gerwig, leads the nominations with nine mentions, including one for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, as well as acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and three of their original songs. It is closely followed by its partner in release date and memes Oppenheimerwhich earned eight nominations, including Best Dramatic Film, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and nominations for actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

Compliments

Koy praised Dick Clark Productions, the current awards producer and owner of the Globes headquarters, the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“This production company has been absolutely top notch,” he said. The relationship with CBS is beautiful. It’s great to see this because this is how things should be done. We need to start moving forward we are moving forward now. You learn from the past and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Koy said he’s looking forward to taking the Globes stage to show off his trademark humor.

“They are giving me the blessing to be me,” he said. I want to bring my style to the Globes. Of course I’m going to have fun. But the most important thing is that I want to make sure everyone is happy. I’m going to make fun of myself. If I can do that, I can make fun of other people.
