They arrest a man who tried to drown his children on a beach

WEST HAVEN, Connecticut — A man trying to drown two small children in a playa of Connecticut early Saturday morning was thwarted by police officers, according to authorities. An officer saw an SUV parked on a West Haven beach around 2:30 a.m. and heard “loud screams” coming from the water as he approached.

When the officer entered the water, the man continued to walk away with the two children while yelling, “Back off!”, according to a West Haven police social media post.

It was evident that the man “was deliberately drowning his children,” according to the message.

Responding officers moved nearly 100 yards (91 meters) from the shore and were joined by other rescuers in a fireboat.

The first officer to arrive was able to grab the children and other officers helped carry them to shore. First aid measures were administered to the children and they were taken to a hospital, where they remained in intensive care on Saturday, according to police.

The man was arrested. It is unknown if he has a lawyer to comment on his judicial situation.

“There is no doubt that the quick response of our patrol officers saved the lives of these children,” police said in their post.

The incident was under investigation.
