They create a temporary section with recyclable material in the process of reopening the collapsed I-95

Fill material to raise the three lanes in both north and south directions of the collapsed section northeast of Philadelphia of Interstate 95 was placed over the past weekend.

Some modifications still remain, but PennDOT assured through a press release that they will comply with the estimated time of two weeks that Governor Josh Shapiro established for reopening.

It should be noted that this opening is the temporary remedy for the reconstruction of I-95 after the collapse. It implies that three central lanes, to the north and south, will reopen as work is concentrated on the construction of the bridge in the three side lanes. Once this phase is completed, traffic will be redirected to the external lanes to build the internal or central ones. This phase of the project does not have a delimited time.

“Worker brigades are working against the clock to get the road reopened as soon as possible,” PennDOT Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll said in writing.

This is what we know:

The temporary material, a mix of recyclable glass, will support the temporary part of the bridge in both directions.

It is expected that the placement of the same will be completed in the next few days to begin to stabilize it and prepare the transitions of the highway.

Current closures and diversions:

  • Drivers southbound from I-95 may access Exit 30 (Cottman Avenue).
  • Drivers northbound on I-95 may access Exit 26 (Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue).

Alternate routes:

  • Southbound I-95: Route 63 West (Woodhaven Road), US 1 South, 76 East, 676 East are available
  • I-95 Northbound: I-676 West, I-76 West, US 1 North to Route 63 East (Woodhaven Road) are available

The collapse of the northern section of I-95 occurred on the morning of June 3, causing the death of the driver of a fuel truck identified as Nathan Moody.
