This morning, May 8, a car accident left more than 20 passengers injured and one person dead, it is the driver of the Flowers company. This happened when the interprovincial bus collided with a trailer on the Panamericana Sur, at the height of the shopping center Jockey Club of Perulocated in the district of Santiago de Groove.
The victim was identified as Jaime Enrique Donayre Mendoza, who was returning from Ica to Lima. However, the driver’s relatives ask for justice, because they denounced that the company did not place a co-pilot to be replaced. In addition, they mentioned that they do not complete their rest hours.
“The flower company never controls the hours of sleep of their workers, because my father would arrive at six in the morning and at ten in the morning he was leaving again (…). And on this trip they did not give him a replacement driver. They never play Ica, bring one and take one,” mentioned one of the victim’s daughters.
According to the testimonies of the passengers, the bus driver would have fallen asleep, so it is not ruled out that he was the cause of the accident. Members of the Prosecutor’s Office, police officers and criminal experts arrived to the place to remove the body that was taken to the morgue.
Other of his daughters indicated that they had found out through the media and not through a company notice. Meanwhile, she will proceed to denounce the Flores company, because she reaffirmed that her father did not have a co-pilot.
Likewise, the representative of the Public Ministry informed that the specialist of the transit unit will investigate if there was any irregularity. Meanwhile, the driver of the trailer identified as Julio César Portal Sánchez was detained at the police station to make his statements.
As a result of this accident, vehicular congestion was reported on the Panamericana Sur, for which the PNP restored the movement of cars.
The driver’s daughter’s complaint is serious, since it puts the lives of hundreds of passengers at risk who travel and trust the interprovincial company to reach their destinations safely. The colonel Gerardo Araujo Valencia, head of the Transit Division of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), mentioned that there were 31 people inside the bus.
From another point, the Peruvian Association of Insurance Companies (apeseg) stated that the bus had SOAT, so the injured can be treated without any investigation. Likewise, burial expenses will be covered.
In Peru, nine people die a day from a traffic accident, are the shocking figures that a study by the Ombudsman’s Office showed in 2022. Meanwhile, 53,544 injuries were reported.
These data are higher than what was recorded in 2021. Of the figures that were known last year, Lima appears as the region with the most claims with 52%. It is followed by La Libertad and Arequipa with 6% each. These accidents are generally caused by driver recklessness, speeding, among others.
In addition, it is important to remember that you should not drive while intoxicated, if you did not rest your full hours, if your vehicle has a fault, among other measures to avoid a major tragedy.
