They propose renewable energy for public schools

The president of the Senate, José Luis Dalmau Santiago, presented a bill on Monday seeking to establish the “Renewable Energy Law in Puerto Rico’s public schools.”

This legislative proposal would declare the use of renewable energy as the first option to provide electricity to public schools.

“It is possible to offer quality services and help the planet simultaneously. Renewable energy is cheaper than that produced by fossil fuels”, it is established in the explanatory statement of the Senate Project 1256.

Dalmau Santiago highlighted the importance of taking action in the face of the climate crisis. “Climate change is an urgent issue to address, the survival of Planet Earth depends on the actions that governments take to avoid the negative impact of global warming,” he declared.

The project, which is co-authored by senators from the Popular Democratic Party, indicates that the federal funds received could be used for improvements to the infrastructure of Puerto Rico. In addition, the use of renewable energy sources in public schools will be prioritized and will be a requirement in construction, reconstruction or modernization projects.

Finally, Dalmau Santiago emphasized that the implementation of renewable energy systems will not imply additional economic charges for the school community or for LUMA Energy subscribers.
