The plenary of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) decided on Norma Lucía Piña Hernández to be the first woman in history to preside over the Highest Court, as well as the Federal Judicial Council.

Reform consulted different judicial sources, who revealed how the Justices of the Supreme Court voted.

In favor of Minister Piña, Ministers Jorge Pardo and Alberto Pérez Dayán, who were proposed in the time of Felipe Calderón, leaned; as well as Minister Javier Laynez, who was appointed by Enrique Peña.

Minister Juan Luis González Alcántara and Minister Yasmín Esquivel also voted for her, who came to the Court at the initiative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador; in addition to Minister Piña’s own vote in her favor.

The dodge factor

The vote of Minister Yasmín Esquivel, who remained in the race despite the controversy over her bachelor’s thesis and was ruled out in the second round, ultimately turned out to be decisive for the election in favor of Piña.

Gutiérrez, the ‘rich minister’

The outgoing president of the Court, Minister Arturo Zaldívar, the dean Minister Luis María Aguilar and Minister Gutiérrez himself leaned towards Alfredo Gutiérrez’s option. All of them came to office at the proposal of Felipe Calderón.

Ministers Loretta Ortiz and Margarita Ríos-Farjat, both nominated by López Obrador, also voted for Gutiérrez.

Still yesterday morning, before the vote, President López Obrador attacked Alfredo Gutiérrez, whom he accused of defending the interests of large taxpayers.

The President recalled Minister Gutiérrez’s passage through the Tax Administration Service (SAT), which he headed from 2008 to 2012, during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón.
