Available since May 10 on Netflix, the Finnish series Dance Brothers depicts the destiny of two brothers who dream of a career in dance. Our opinion.

Since May 10, the new Netflix series Dance Brothers features two brothers: Sakke (Samuel Kujala) and Roni Luoto (Roderick Kabanga). They have been dancing since their childhood and would like to put on their own show “Drastic”. The Finnish dance community being very closed, the two survive somehow from several odd jobs. If dancing actually allows them to work, it is above all in advertisements, behind a bar, or in the reserves of their mother’s laundry that their art is expressed. Until the day when fate (as if by magic) smiles on them and someone finally wants to believe in their dream. They can finally open their nightclub “la Laundry” supposed to finance the creation of their troop.

A disappointing plot and a lack of depth

On paper, the series had everything to succeed, but the tricks are (too) visible. The characters are terribly lacking in depth. The plots are not very detailed and rather expected. Transitions and flashbacks not very happy invite themselves and do not really serve the narration. Finally, what about the somewhat easy hallucination scenes linked to taking a few narcotics. Yet the aesthetics and the underground atmosphere could have been at the service of a better plot.

A missed date with dance

After Battle (2018), Tiny Pretty Things (2020), Jiva ! (2021) or Wild rythm (2022) Netflix seems to want to emphasize foreign series that promote dance. However, the subject is still relatively little treated with regard to the enormous production of thrillers, police dramas or historical series such as Queen Cleopatra, the latest from the streaming giant. Even less when it comes to two young men and not at all classical dance. The real dance scenes are unfortunately quite rare and we have to wait for the fifth episode to see a real battle between the two brothers and a slightly longer dance scene. Even if over the episodes the dance is more present it remains too anecdotal and the series, however promising, turns out to be a little frustrating. Fans of choreography, go your way at the risk of being disappointed.
