Máximo Thomsen, one of the eight defendants for the murder of Fernando Báez Sosa, asked to testify on the tenth day of the trial after breaking down during his mother’s statement.

As soon as the defendant expressed his desire to speak, the court gave him room and said: “I want to apologize because never in my life would it have occurred to me to kill someone. Never.”

After being repentant, he said that he wanted to give his word since he considered that things had been said about him: “I spent 3 years listening to things about myself in which I did not recognize myself, they spoke with a lot of hate,” he lamented. That is why he explained that he decided to tell how he lived that day: “Today in this place I wanted to give the reality of what happened that day, I want to give my version of what happened.”

As Thomsen explained, the fight with Báez Sosa arose in a different way than what the rest of the witnesses recounted: “I hear that I organized and I am a leader, I went to fight that it was one person against many. I did not see if there was one or more friends”. He also pointed out that he became aware of death the next day.

Thomsen decided to speak after breaking down during her mother’s statement: “I wake up and I want this to be a nightmare,” she said through tears.
