The climate activist Greta Thunberg has called for resistance to the demolition of the hamlet by the energy giant RWE in the German brown coal village of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia. “When governments and corporations destroy the environment (..), people fight back,” said the Swede today during a visit to Lützerath.

She has been observing the situation in the town on the edge of the North Rhine-Westphalian opencast lignite mine for a long time, said Thunberg, who launched the “Fridays for Future” movement. She will also take part in a demonstration to preserve Lützerath tomorrow, she confirmed. The village is currently being cleared by the police of climate activists who had occupied houses there. “Fight for survival,” said Thunberg. “Lützi stays!” She chanted with demonstrators.

The energy giant RWE wants to demolish the hamlet in order to be able to excavate the lignite beneath the village. Lützerath has been cleared by strong police forces since Wednesday. The police are now having difficulties with an underground tunnel system. According to the activists, there are currently two people in a tunnel under Lützerath.
