Amazon has reportedly inked an extensive rights deal for Tomb Raider. The company is now planning to make a movie and a TV series based on the series, alongside the upcoming Tomb Raider game in which Amazon is the publisher.

Alicia Vikander had the lead role in the 2018 Tomb Raider film, but is reportedly not allowed to continue.

It was The Hollywood Reporter who first announced the agreement. Sources who have spoken to the website say that the plan is to create a larger, coherent Lara Croft universe with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as inspiration.

The news comes after MGM lost the rights to Tomb Raider last summer. At the time, there were rumors that a future film would restart the whole saga, without Sweden’s Alicia Vikander – who starred in the 2018 film Tomb Raider.

Currently, there are no concrete details about either the film or the TV series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon has indeed brought in Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write the script for the TV project. Waller-Bridge is best known for her role in the critically acclaimed series Fleabag.

Even if Amazon secures the Tomb Raider rights, it will not affect the planned anime series for Netflix. Serial author Tasha Huo took to Twitter at the weekend to report that this is still on the way, but that the work is taking a long time.

As far as games are concerned, Crystal Dynamics is again responsible for the next action adventure about Lara Croft. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, but otherwise the developer has not yet said anything about the plot or launch plans.
