Apple’s next operating system is just around the corner. iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS will soon be joined by “xrOS”: The New Zealand Trademark Office has published the corresponding application for this word mark, set in Apple’s system font SF Pro. Previously, trademark entries for “Reality Pro” and “Reality One” were known – possible names of the expected Apple headset. “xrOS” was among other things requested for the protection classescovering areas of computer hardware and software.
Augmented reality as a thrust
With “XR” xrOS alludes to “Extended Reality”. According to previous reports, Apple’s headset will make the peripheral area around the eyes opaque, similar to pure VR headsets – or ski goggles. However, the headset should capture the physical environment via a camera system and display it on the integrated screens if necessary, in order to enable augmented reality applications, for example.
A company called “Deep Dive” has applied for the “xrOS” trademark in New Zealand. Apple regularly uses such shell companies to secure trademark rights for new, as yet unannounced products at an early stage. Deep Dive has filed other trademark applications in the past, as reported by Macrumorsincluding the inscription “Deep Screen”.
iPad-Apps im Apple-Headset?
The term xrOS has already appeared in other Apple software and has long been considered the name of the upcoming operating system. So far, observers have been expecting Apple to adapt its core apps known from iOS and iPadOS for the new operating system and also to create a porting option for iPad apps from third-party developers. A large part of the developer conference will be dedicated to the new possibilities for developers, it was said recently.
