A The play, written in 1986, talks about Paulino, a former itinerant variety artist, who recalls, “amid the ruins, the day when he and his partner Carmela were forced by nationalist forces to perform before an audience made up of troops and their prisoners”, says the Teatro da Cerca de São Bernardo (TCSB), in a press release sent to the Lusa agency.

Carmela rebels against that spectacle and ends up being shot.

In the show, Carmela appears to Paulino and the two “revisit the dilemmas, choices and commitments that each of them posed in this tragic episode, reconstructing step by step the events that resulted in the death of the actress”, says the TCSB.

For Pedro Lamas, who directs the show, the piece “takes Sinisterra’s experimentalism to the limits, with the boundaries of space and time being imploded and challenged at all times”.

The show deals with the position of each person in the face of that “moment” in the face of Francoist forces, the director told the Lusa agency.

“What Sinisterra calls into question and that speaks to us, at this moment of uprising of the extreme right, is which paths we can follow, when all the circumstances around us oppress the possibility of acting”, he pointed out.

Faced with the Francoist forces, Paulino bends and Camila rebels.

“She pays and he survives, but at what cost? When we don’t have a path, where do we go? Do you survive at any cost?”, asks Pedro Lamas, also highlighting the way in which the play addresses the responsibility of the living to ensure that the memory does not erase.

The play by Sanchis Sinisterra, one of the biggest names in contemporary European dramaturgy, will be on stage between Thursday and May 14, with performances on Thursdays and Fridays (7:00 pm), Saturdays (9:30 pm) and Sundays ( 4:00 pm).

The show, which is a co-production between Trincheira Teatro and TCSB, is staged by Pedro Lamas and interpreted by Diana Narciso and Hugo Inácio.

The ticket costs ten euros (with the possibility of half a ticket for people under 30 and over 65, students, unemployed people and theater professionals and amateurs).
