Two fishing boats, each with 400 refugees on board, have been spotted in the central Mediterranean region by the “Seabird 2”, an aircraft operated by the NGO Sea Watch. Sea Watch reported this on Twitter today. “Rescuing these types of boats is very complex: we have to get the people on board to safety,” the NGO continues.

The situation in Lampedusa is now critical. More than 1,600 people are accommodated on the Mediterranean island, including at least 100 children with their families and around 350 unaccompanied minors, said the aid organization Save the Children.
