The UN World Food Program (WFP) wants to resume its emergency aid programs in Sudan. WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain announced this via Twitter today. “WFP is rapidly resuming its programs to provide the life-saving assistance that many people so desperately need now,” McCain wrote.

Shortly after the outbreak of violence in Sudan about two weeks ago, the World Food Program stopped its work after several employees died in the fighting. According to McCain, millions of Sudanese are starving as a result of the crisis.

In the north-east African country with around 46 million inhabitants, de facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been fighting with the help of the armed forces since April 15 against his deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, who heads the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The two generals had taken over the leadership of Sudan through joint military coups.
