“Similar to the previous year, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day was extremely mild in most of Austria, with maximum values between ten and 18 degrees,” said Sabrina Marth from ZAMG.
On New Year’s Eve it is quite sunny in most of Austria, with a few dense clouds in between. After minus three and about plus ten degrees, the afternoon temperatures usually rise to between 5 and 18 degrees. The night then passes without rain and snowfall and does not get too cold. The temperatures at midnight in most of Austria are between five and ten degrees. It is most likely to be slightly frosty in wind-protected, cloudless Alpine valleys.
Record breaking
These are the highest values in the range of records, both of which come from the previous year. The highest temperature on a New Year’s Eve was 18.3 degrees in Berndorf in Lower Austria on December 31, 2021. The very next day, a new record for a New Year’s Day was set, with 18.8 degrees on January 1, 2022 in Köflach in of Styria.
Sunny start to the new year
On New Year’s Day on Sunday, the fog fields in the lowlands are more frequent than on the previous day and can persist in places in the south and east until noon. In most of Austria it will be quite sunny again. According to the current forecast of the ZAMG from Wednesday morning, the early temperatures range from minus three to over ten degrees, the daily highs depending on fog or sun are around four to 17 degrees.
