Short-term rentals have become the majority in the Breton city. Real estate speculation forces people to settle elsewhere.

Every year, in the summer, Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) experiences the influx of 250,000 tourists a day. An unbearable situation for the inhabitants. In twenty years, short-term rentals have become the majority. Real estate speculation is forcing residents to move elsewhere. “What saddens me deeply is also the lack of civility of people”, laments Catherine. Exhausted, she decided to put her apartment up for sale and move to another neighborhood.

Quotas by district imposed on owners

On rental sites, thousands of offers offer apartments for tourists. To stem this phenomenon, the city has implemented one of the strictest regulations in France. Since June 2021, quotas per district have been imposed on owners, who must also obtain authorization from the city. A way for the mayor of Saint-Malo to put housing back on a market in tension. Another constraint, multi-owners can only rent one property.
