According to Union faction leader Johann Wadephul (CDU), China is trying to exploit foreign policy disagreements in the government. “The short-term cancellation of Finance Minister Lindner’s visit shows how devastating it is that the federal government has still not developed a uniform China strategy,” Wadephul told the editorial network Germany (RND/Wednesday). “China is trying to exploit the dissonance in the federal government and play one side against the other. That must not happen to us, because it weakens us.”
Wadephul called for the federal government to present its new China strategy before the German-Chinese government consultations scheduled for June. “A coherent China strategy supported by the entire federal government is overdue,” he said. Clarity must be created here before the consultations.
The consultations are correct. “We must keep in touch with China and keep trying to find common solutions to global challenges, even if this is difficult,” said Wadephul.
