Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir officially opened the Green Week in Berlin. At the opening ceremony of the agricultural fair, the Green politician welcomed, among others, his Ukrainian counterpart Mykola Solskyj. “Your country and all people in Ukraine have our deepest appreciation and solidarity,” Özdemir said on Thursday evening.

He emphasized the long-standing partnership between the two countries in the field of agriculture and the food industry. “The projects will play an important role not only in the war, but also in the reconstruction of agricultural structures.” Özdemir also expressed his dismay at a helicopter crash in which the Minister of the Interior of Ukraine, Denys Monastyrskyj, and 13 other people died the day before came.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey also named the war in Ukraine and its effects as an important topic of the Green Week. “That’s why it’s good that we’re also sending a sign of solidarity when it comes to content-related issues during the fair,” said the SPD politician.

Solskyj referred to the importance of Ukrainian agriculture for global food security and the ecological transformation of global agriculture. “We are part of the civilized world. We are helping to solve global problems,” he said. “We need victory and peace for this.”

In addition to war and food security, the fair also focuses on long-term developments in agriculture: the ecological change in the sector and the political framework have already been extensively discussed in the days before. Due to Corona, the fair had been canceled for the past two years. From Friday it will open its doors to the public again. The organizers are expecting around 300,000 visitors. (dpa)
