At least two people were killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on the Russian village of Suzemka, located about ten kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border, said this Sunday April 30 Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the oblast of Bryansk . The day before, a drone attack caused a gigantic fire in Crimea, annexed by Moscow, and occupied cities were bombed. The fire broke out at an oil depot in Sevastopol, the home port of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.
“A fire is in progress in an oil depot in the bay of Kazatchia (…). According to initial information, it was caused by a drone attack”, wrote on Telegram, shortly after the event, the governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvojayev, emphasizing that “no one was injured”. Sixty firefighters were dispatched to the scene to fight the fire which is raging over an area of approximately 1,000 m2. “The situation is under control”, assured the leader afterwards, affirming that “civilian infrastructures are not threatened”. The Kremlin has not commented on these two attacks.
Pope thanks Hungarians for welcoming Ukrainians
Pope Francis pleaded on Saturday to “eradicate the evils of indifference”, during a meeting with refugees on the second day of his visit to Hungary. Some 600 refugees – mostly from Ukraine – and poor people gathered at the neo-Gothic St. Elisabeth Church in the heart of the capital Budapest. After hearing various testimonies, the pope thanked the Hungarians, in particular the religious associations, for their welcome towards the Ukrainians, without mentioning those of other countries. Faced with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, present in the audience, he also castigated “the rigidity”, the “closures” and the tendency “to withdraw”.
Ukrainian cereals: Brussels finds an agreement with 5 countries
The European Commission and five EU countries reached an agreement this Friday, April 28 on the thorny subject of the transit of Ukrainian cereals on their soil. This commitment provides for the end of import bans, which will be accompanied by “exceptional safeguard measures” for wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds.
The 27 member countries of the European Union had, in May 2022, abolished customs duties on agricultural products exported by Ukraine. The operation was to allow kyiv to transit its goods by land, since access to the rest of the world by the Black Sea was blocked by the Russians. But the massive influx of foodstuffs has deeply destabilized the internal markets of the countries bordering Ukraine, causing prices to fall.
Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania have therefore successively closed their borders to Ukrainian agricultural products.
