In the world of cinema (even video games with God of War) the “sequence shot” is undoubtedly the best way to immerse the viewer. On paper, it’s simple: single take, without cutting, like a real window on the action in progress. Admittedly, for the longest sequences, filmmakers often use digital connections, but the technique very often gives impressive results… This is the case, for example, in birdman and the Revenant by the Spaniard Alejandro González Iñárritu, in La La Land | babylon by Damien Chazelle, even Gravity by Alfonso Cuaron. The sequence shot, even if it requires precise preparation, is accessible to everyone and all genres. In 2019, a certain war movie was talked about for this reason.

1917 is coming to Netflix!

This famous war film is 1917 by Sam Mendes (notably known for having directed the Skyfall component of James Bond) which will arrive February 24, 2023 on Netflix. More than having one or two scenes shot without cutting, the feature film is a giant sequence shot of two hours, with of course some digital cuts. If you’ve seen the trailer, you probably remember this excerpt where actor George MacKay (Corporal William Schofield) goes up a battlefield in front of the camera, without the slightest “cut”. The young man then navigates between the bombs and the soldiers.

“(In 1917), each scene had its own challenges! It was like making a mini film, then linking all these mini films together (…) You can’t do any editing, so you have to invest yourself” explains thus Sam Mendes on Cinema Blend’s mic (via Allocinated). The result is both gripping and strikingly realistic. and conquered award ceremonies around the world. Best Cinematography and Visual Effects at the 2020 Oscars… Best Drama and Director at the Golden Globes side. The film tells the story of two young British soldiers who must deliver an urgent message aimed at canceling a doomed attack. No excuse not to enjoy it when it arrives on Netflix. The Next Mendes Empire of Light hits theaters March 1.
