As a single father who describes himself as trans and non-binary, Danny Wakefield shares his journey on social media.
When Danny Wakefield (36) fell ill with Covid-19 in April 2020, he sought medical treatment. There he was surprised to learn that he had become pregnant after a one-time sexual encounter. At this point, the trans man had been on hormone treatment for a long time and also had a mastectomy (i.e. the removal of a woman’s breasts) behind him.
In an essay for Newsweek, he wrote that he had always wanted children. It was also clear to him that many parents or people with a desire to have children who identify as trans or non-binary lack examples and role models. And so it is that he started sharing his experiences of parenthood in pictures and short videos on TikTok and Instagram. The single father has 115,000 followers on Instagram alone. The many positive comments show how important his online presence is to others.
Despite the persistent nausea, it was a wonderful experience
The proud dad does not shy away from difficult topics, reports on postpartum depression, fears of being a single parent and non-stop morning sickness. He experienced fewer than five days of the entire pregnancy when he didn’t feel bad. Nevertheless, he sees it as the “most beautiful experience” he was allowed to have. He says about this time: “I learned to love my body in a way that I had never experienced before.”
Of course, there are also a lot of negative comments. But he has very clear words for his envious people: “Just because I didn’t feel like a woman doesn’t mean that I can’t use the organs of my birth to my advantage. I have a uterus and have used this. Trans men and non-binary people can also give birth.”
