Isabelle Huppert and Fabrice Luchini are not the interpreters of Benoît Jacquot’s new film, but its subject. “By Hearts” is a documentary. For four days in the summer of 2021, the filmmaker followed them to Avignon, as each rehearsed a different show. She, “the Cherry Orchard”, by Chekhov, directed by Tiago Rodrigues, which was going to be performed in the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais des Papes. Him, a reading of texts by Nietzsche organized by France-Culture in the garden of the Calvet Museum.
Filmed simultaneously but separately, they did not meet once during filming. “L’Obs” brought them together in Paris, in the library of the Hôtel Lutetia.

FL We weren’t there at the same time. On the other hand, I was an extra in 1977 in “Violette Nozière”, by Claude Chabrol. I played the syphilitic. But it was only in 1998, when we filmed “Pas de scandale” by Benoît Jacquot together, that we met.
