Berlin/Munich.
Winter holidays in some federal states and good snow conditions in many a ski region: at the weekend many people are likely to set off by car in the direction of the Alps and low mountain ranges – things get tight here.

Good news? Gladly: Those who are not heading towards the Alps or the low mountain ranges next weekend (January 27th to 29th) should be able to make headway on the motorways without any problems. However, if you want to go winter sports by car, you need loud Auto Club Europe (ACE) and ADAC sometimes strong nerves.

Because the beginning of the winter holidays in Bremen, Lower Saxony, Berlin and Brandenburg mean that there are a few school-free days after the weekend. Together with the recent good snow conditions in many winter sports resorts, numerous ski fans are likely to be drawn from the north towards the Alps and the low mountain ranges.

Danger of traffic jams towards the south

According to ACE, it can get crowded on the classic travel routes to Austria. The risk of traffic jams increases on the A 7, A 8, A 95 and A 99 motorways in the direction of the Alps, especially on Saturday mornings and on Sunday afternoons in the opposite direction. The routes to and from the low mountain ranges are also a popular destination when the snow conditions are good and fill up accordingly.

Otherwise, the clubs nationwide assume a mostly normal traffic volume.

Alpine neighbors: Delays around the winter sports areas

According to the clubs, there should be delays in access to the winter sports areas in Austria and Switzerland over the weekend. According to the ADAC, the run on the slopes is now increasing. Travelers must also be prepared for this on the transit routes. The ADAC expects the heaviest traffic on Saturday and Sunday in the morning and late afternoon.

According to the ADAC, typical traffic jams in Austria are the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner autobahns, the Fernpass route and the Tyrolean, Salzburg and Vorarlberg federal roads. For Switzerland, the Autoclub names the Gotthard route, the access roads to the ski areas of Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and Central Switzerland.

On the return journey there may be shorter waiting times at the borders from Austria to Germany. The ADAC is currently not assuming more than half an hour.

You can see how long you have to wait at the crossings Walserberg (Salzburg – Bad Reichenhall), Kiefersfelden (Kufstein Süd – Kiefersfelden) and Suben (Ort i. Innkreis – Pocking). on-line at the Austrian infrastructure company Asfinag.
