Shortly before the constitutive meeting of the parliamentary investigative committee of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament into the blocked A-45 bridge near Lüdenscheid, its chairman Stefan Engstfeld, member of the Green Party, called for constructive work. “Of course, witnesses can also be put through the wringer, and there will also be shrill noises, but I don’t want a mud fight,” he said in an interview with the Hagen-based WESTFALENPOST (Monday edition, May 1).

The committee of inquiry was set up by the opposition factions SPD and FDP, who want to clarify in particular whether today’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) could have contributed to the fact that the Rahmedetalbrücke had to be closed during his time as NRW Transport Minister. The originally planned new building had been postponed, and in December 2021 an inspection revealed that the bridge was so dilapidated that it had to be closed to all traffic immediately. Since then, the region has been groaning under the detour traffic.

The Greens, who have governed in a coalition with the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia since last year, had spoken out against the committee of inquiry. Nevertheless, Stefan Engstfeld now promises a non-partisan administration to the WP. He goes to work with an open mind: “Greens are always in favor of transparency and clarification. Committees of inquiry often develop their own momentum, simply through the hearing of witnesses.” The country will keep the issue of bridge infrastructure busy for a long time to come: “There is an interest in clarifying the matter. If we find any shortcomings, our work can lead to comparable problems being better managed in the future.”

With Stefan Engstfeld, a Green politician will head a committee of inquiry for the first time in NRW history.
