As the summer holidays approach, Algerian travelers rush to the administrative districts to request or renew their travel documents, in particular their passports. In this wake, the Algerian authorities have detailed, in the latest issue of the Official Journal, released on May 7, the procedures for handing over and destroying passports.
Indeed, the Algerian authorities have revealed something new concerning the process of issuing and destroying this travel document. Because, yes, the services concerned by the granting of passports proceed to the cancellation of the latter after a period of six months.
Algerian passport: what are the terms of delivery and destruction?
In the official journal n°31, published on May 7, 2023, the Algerian authorities have published a new decree relating to the modalities of delivery and granting of passports in Algeria. Indeed, according to its text, the passport established by the national center for securities and secure documents is immediately handed over to the issuing authorities, namely the Wali or the head of the diplomatic or consular post.
In this wake, the travel document is recorded electronically. And this, upon receipt, from the competent authority having received the request for obtaining the passport. The person concerned will be informed by the latter of the establishment of his passport. In particular by means of a written or electronic notice of withdrawal.
Moreover, according to article 5 of this decree, the applicant for an Algerian passport only has a period of six months to withdraw his document. Following the expiry of this period, the competent authorities will proceed to the physical destruction of the passport drawn up and not withdrawn by its holder. And this, by perforating the electronic chip and the machine readable zone (MRZ), using a tool dedicated to this purpose.
On the other hand, the Algerian traveler can always provide a new request to obtain a new passport. Thus, the person concerned is required to pay again all the costs determined in the legislation in force.
