Products like firmer fruits and vegetables can be eaten if we cut off the moldy part. But dairy products in cream, such as yogurt or cream, should be thrown away immediately.

It’s happened to us all. We have a food at home that we forgot to eat for a while and when we go to look, some mold has already started to appear. Do we have to throw all the food away or can we just cut the moldy part and eat the rest? The answer varies depending on the food in question.

For food safety expert Sylvia Anderson, there are circumstances when you can just cut off the moldy part and eat the rest, especially at a time when food prices have skyrocketed and avoiding food waste is more imperative than ever.

In the case of harder fruits and vegetables and firm, there should be no problem cutting off the moldy part and eating the rest. But the expert warns not to touch the mold with a knife, to avoid contamination. Hard cheeses and salamis are also safe to eat.

Anderson adds that there is no risk in jams and marmalades with a little mold on top. “They have a lot of sugar“, reveals to Insider. In these situations, sugar acts as a preservative.

Among the foods that you should not eat if they have already created mold, dairy products are at the top of the list, and should avoid eating yogurt, cream and cheese in cream.

Pasta sauces should also be disposed of completely. Even if you don’t see any more mold after removing the contaminated part, the moisture in these foods means it’s likely the mold has spread and produced toxic substances that can cause allergies and food poisoning.

Anderson also recommends not eating bread that already has mold even after cutting the affected part, especially if it already smells bad.
