Iacifists will be the last to assert that the arms race does not make the world safer… In NATO, the opposite reasoning prevails, in the unanimous opinion, exacerbated by the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine . “In a more dangerous world, it is obvious that we must spend more,” said the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance on Wednesday.

Jens Stoltenberg was speaking after a meeting of defense ministers from the 30 allies. They had a “first discussion” on new objectives in terms of military budgets. The debate must be settled at the NATO summit in July in Vilnius (Lithuania). It promises to be tough for the lagging Allies on this front – particularly for Belgium. Belgian Minister Dedonder pleads: “You have to be proactive but also be realistic”.
