This could become annoying if there is a new iPhone under the Christmas tree and you want to restore the WhatsApp chat backup from the cloud. Numerous users note in the App Store that the backup in the iCloud would not work at the moment. There doesn’t seem to be a fix at the moment. The function can be found in WhatsApp under Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. You can try the general troubleshooting path that WhatsApp provides:

If you’re having trouble creating or restoring an iCloud backup, you can try the following troubleshooting steps.

Backup cannot be created

Please go through the following steps if you are unable to create an iCloud backup:

  • Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple ID you use to access iCloud.
  • make sure that iCloud Drive is switched on. Open the iPhonesettingstap your name > iCloud and see if iCloud Drive is switched on.
  • switch iCloud Drive off and then on again. Open the iPhonesettings > tap your name > iCloud and switch iCloud Drive off and on again.
  • If on one of your other devices iCloud Drive activated with your Apple ID, update to iOS 12 or later to create backups.
  • Make sure you have enough free space in your iCloud account to create a backup. You need at least 2.05 times the size of your backup as free space in your iCloud account.
  • If you’re trying to back up over cellular, turn on cellular data for iCloud.
  • Perform a manual backup by going to WhatsApp at settings > chat > Chat backup > Back up now choose
  • Try to create a manual backup over a different network. This is preferably the network you connect to most often.

Backup cannot be restored

Please go through the following steps if you are unable to restore an iCloud backup:

  • Make sure you’re trying to restore the data using the same phone number and iCloud account that was used to create the backup.
  • If you are restoring an end-to-end encrypted backup, make sure you are using the correct key/password.
  • Make sure you have enough space on your iPhone to restore the backup. You need at least 2.05 times the size of your backup as free space in your iCloud account and on your phone.
  • If the backup was created using iCloud Drive, you can only restore it to a device running iOS 12 or later.
  • If you have iCloud Drive turned on for another device that uses your Apple ID, you won’t be able to restore data to your iPhone unless it’s running iOS 12 or later.
  • Try restoring from a different network. This is preferably the network you connect to most often.
  • switch iCloud Drive off and then on again. Open the iPhonesettings > tap your name > iCloud and switch iCloud Drive off and on again.
  • Sign out of iCloud and restart your iPhone by turning it off and on again. Then sign back into iCloud and try the restore again.

In the Apple community suggests a user as follows:

Open WhatsApp >> Settings >> Chats >> Chat Backup >> (here we can see our backup details).

Minimize the WhatsApp app (don’t remove it from Recents).

Go to the phone’s Settings >> Click on your profile picture/name >> iCloud >> Apps using iCloud >> WhatsApp >> Toggle to turn it off.

Minimize the phone’s settings (don’t remove it from Recents).

Open WhatsApp from Recent >> here you will see “Sign in to iCloud to back up your history. Tap here for instructions.”.

Minimize the Whatsapp app again (but don’t remove it from the Recent section).

Now turn on WhatsApp in iCloud just like you turned it off in step 3.

Then open WhatsApp again under Recents >> Tap Back Up Now and it will be safely backed up.

So maybe check first.
