Cubas, a 61-year-old lawyer who was removed by his Senate colleagues in 2019sweeps social networks for his open speech, mostly in Guaraniand for episodes in which he threw water in the faces of his former congressional colleagues, reprimanded a police chief for his physical condition and even branded well-known leaders as corrupt.
“We are not going to do the alternation, we are going to do the radical revolution from the civil point of view”, he told the news agency EFE the candidate for the National Crusade Partywho does not hesitate to hug, take photos, dance and even joke with his followers.
His style does not admit half measures: “I criticize this democracy, which has not fed or educated the people”he expresses in an interview that he attends sitting on a sidewalk surrounded by cell phones that record the scene and by the public that follows his statements attentively.
He is also in favor of establishing the death penalty “for those who kill to steal”, “the one who kills the father or the mother”, for “the femicide”, “the one who rapes a minor under fourteen years of age” and for those who “profit with State money through money laundering, passive bribery or the asset. True to his style, he assures that he will be the one who dictates the “harsh law”, but at the same time he will be “the first slave of the law”.
Similarly, he warned that, as is happening today in El Salvador, Paraguay needs a Exception status “to put an end to this streak of poor people who steal from the poor”.
Regarding the United States sanctions against leaders of the ruling Colorado Party, such as former President Horacio Cartes and Vice President Hugo Velázquez, he considered them a “geostrategic” error in the middle of the campaign, since he considers that they made the former ruler “a victim.”
“They were wrong. They should have waited out this election and then taken him to Guantánamo, wherever they want, but not now. This moment is very sensitive, ”said Cubas, who promised good relations with the United States, in whose capital he was born when his father, the military man Roberto Cubas Barboza, was assigned to the Organization of American States (OAS).
He was also close to Brazil and, especially, to Argentina, a country that he is grateful for having welcomed two million Paraguayans.
When it comes to defining himself by a political referent, Cubas says he identifies with Bukele “all life”.
“It seems to me that over the years he has become a eclectic. he is a man today very versatile mentally and for the execution of their projects”, he affirmed about the Salvadoran leader.
He stressed that Bukele combines the free supply and demand with the intervention of the State. “Here in Paraguay it will be like this: the prices of the basic family basket must be regulated, because here there are no monopolies, there are oligopolies and that is the most serious problem we have today,” he defended.
And given the possibility that, installed in power, he will face a political trial similar to the one that evicted Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) from the Presidency, he warned that his detractors “They are going to have to face five million Paraguayans”.
