The World Health Organization (WHO) published, this Friday (13/1), a new guide for the management of patients with Covid-19 that reduces the recommended time of isolation when the infection is found. Without testing, people who no longer experience symptoms can be released five days from the first day of signs of the disease – previously, 10 days were suggested.

“The evidence considered by this document shows that people without symptoms are less likely to transmit the virus than those with signs of the disease”, it says to the document. The recommendation is valid only for individuals without symptoms on the fifth day, as the data analyzed by the entity show an up to three times greater risk of transmission in people with signs of infection on day five compared to the tenth day.

WHO also continues to recommend that the public wear masks when exposed to a person with the virus, infected with or suspected of having the coronavirus, having contact with an individual who is at risk of serious illness from Covid-19, or for anyone that it is in closed, poorly ventilated and crowded places.

Experts ask that the use of safety items be considered based on local epidemiological data, considering the levels of vaccination, hospitalization and immunity of the population.

Medications

In the document, the organization once again “strongly” recommends the use of Paxlovid for mild and moderate cases in patients in risk groups for the infection. Pregnant and lactating women should talk to a doctor to define the need for the use of the medicine.

WHO remains against the use of sotrovimab and casirivimab-imdevimab, two monoclonal antibodies that have not shown sufficient benefit in published studies to date.
