Women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe announces her retirement from the pitch

Women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe announced Saturday that she will retire from the field at the end of the 2023 season.

Days before participating in her fourth World Cup, the American athlete announced that she will retire at the end of the season from the National Women’s Soccer League.

Rapinoe, 38, made the announcement on Twitter, saying she “could never have imagined the ways soccer would forever shape and change her life.”

“It is with a deep sense of peace and gratitude that I have decided that this will be my last season playing this beautiful game,” said the Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion.

Team USA aims for a third consecutive title when the Women’s World Cup begins on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
