The parrot species macaw has been named this year’s “Zoo Animal of the Year” at the Wuppertal Zoo. The title is given to endangered animal species.
Native to Central and South America Era is from German experts in the Wuppertal Zoo to the “zoo animal of the year” been determined in 2023. The Zoological Society for Species and Population Protection (ZGAP) announced on Thursday that many species of this parrot genus are highly endangered. It runs the campaign together with German zoos.
According to the society, the title is given to endangered animal species that are not so much in the public eye. The campaign is intended to raise awareness of conservation efforts, to clarify the contribution of Wuppertal zoos to conservation breeding efforts and to raise donations for special conservation projects for the respective species. Last year the pustule pig was voted zoo animal of the year.
Poaching is the main reason for the decline in macaws
According to the ZGAP, poaching is the main reason for the decline in the population of macaws. Poachers could make “good money” with the parrots because they are popular ornamental birds. However, they are also hunted for their feathers and as a sporting challenge.
The population is also suffering from the spread of agricultural land because the parrots are dependent on certain tree species as cave nesters. The remaining habitats of the macaws have become so small that a single forest fire can wipe out an entire population.
Campaign redeemers go to good causes
The proceeds of this year’s campaign should therefore flow more into protective measures for Red-fronted Macaws in Bolivia and for Lesser and Greater Green Macaws in Ecuador. In addition, the breeding efforts in zoological gardens to build up reserve populations are to be intensified. (afp)
