An Israeli company offers disinformation campaigns for money – and that worldwide. Joint research by ZDF, SPIEGEL and ZEIT with the investigative network Forbidden Stories reveals the extent – to be seen Wednesday, February 15, 2023, 5 a.m., in the ZDF media library. ZDFheute.de reports about it.
Three journalists meet undercover men who operate in secret. Calling themselves Team Jorge, they claim they can rig any election in the world. On offer – the complete package: sowing doubts, causing trouble, in the end torpedoing democracy. They call it electronic warfare. Your tools are an army of avatars.
Research into Team Jorge took several months. The journalists witnessed Team Jorge infiltrate Telegram accounts of campaigners in Africa, software created an army of avatars, stolen identities and breached security systems on the web. A campaign by the Israeli disinformation company causes an emu to die, millions of people around the world fall for the fake death news. What if that were also the case with referendums, elections, votes?
Journalists from more than 30 editorial offices worldwide were involved in the research – including from the Israeli daily Haaretz, Radio France, Le Monde and the Guardian. In Germany, ZDF, SPIEGEL and ZEIT researched. The revelation is part of the “Storykillers” project of the investigative network “Forbidden Stories”, which wants to show the serious consequences of disinformation campaigns.
